The Calibrationist

Review by Lorelei

The Calibrationist
Amanda Parsons

The Calibrationist is set in a world where psychics are real, and heavily regulated by world governments. Forced to wear collars, subject to hatred and oppression, sometimes a psychic will experience an ‘outpouring’, an involuntary and uncontrolled release of their powers that can cause major damage and casualties. When that happens, they call in a calibrationist, another psychic who is able to get them under control. As someone who works with the police, calibrationists are seen as traitors by their own.

Wayne never wanted to be a calibrationist, but he wasn’t given much of a choice. When there’s an unexplained uptick in the number of outpourings, he’s partnered with police sergeant Veronica to get to the bottom of things.

I’m sorry to say I DNF’d this one when I realized I was 60% of the way into the book and still felt like nothing had happened. I noticed a lot of typos and editorial issues, and places where I had to read a sentence several times to figure out what it meant. In some places the tense would switch between past/present/past within the space of a couple of sentences.

This was independently published, and I think it was a good story idea, but needed some more polish and editing to pull it together. I’ll keep an eye out for this author in the future though, to see what else she publishes; I suspect with more practice she’s going to create some very interesting stories.
