I know you all loved Onyx Storm. I know, I know. And I can even see why! Dark broody love interest, cool setting, dragons, dragons, dragons.
I’m sorry, I just can’t. It wasn’t bad, but it was… fine. It was just fine.
Let’s start with Violet and Xaden. I know it’s a super popular thing, for the MMC to be a dark, broody, tortured soul who is only made whole by the existence of his love interest, and he’s so insanely jealous that anytime another man LOOKS at her, he loses control of his powers, or whatever. I’m sorry, I hate that. I don’t want a guy that can’t handle his shit, you know? That’s not attractive to me, so I rolled my eyes at all of Xaden’s macho posturing. I can’t, I just can’t.
And Basgiath… let me get this straight. You guys straight up rebelled against the corrupt people in the school in the last book, did your thing, saved everyone, now the wards are dropping and shit is getting dire, and you’re… *checks notes* going to go back to class and let the corrupt jerks still tell you what to do. Do I have that right? The evil baddies are destroying cities and school is going to be in session like learning math is still our priority. That’s like UCLA telling students that hey, we know the entire city is on fire, but your butt had better be in that seat for lecture, young lady!
Once we got away from all that, the second half of the book was much more engaging than the first half, and what saved it from having 2 stars. I like a bad boy, but Xaden’s emotional maturity made him feel like he was 13, and that’s a hard NOPE for me in terms of spicy romance.
I’m glad for those who love it, I’m thrilled for Yarros at her success, and I’ll probably read the next because I’m mildly interested to see if the plotline is interesting, but for me it’s a low 3/5.
Tell me how wrong I am! You know you want to.
