On the Mountain

On the Mountain
Riley Hart

A sweet story about two unhappy, traumatized people who find solace with each other.

This is not the first "gruff mountain man x twink from the outside world" story I've read, but it's my favorite so far. I found myself comparing it to Wild by Adrienne Wilder, but while that story kept piling on more and more melodrama (an angry grizzly bear! the Mafia!) this one was much more restrained in comparison; although one of the MCs' lives is at risk at one point in the novel, the main conflict is almost completely internal. Will the MCs learn to trust each other? Will they process and begin to heal from their trauma?

I appreciate that. I prefer it to grizzly bears, honestly.

Overall I enjoyed this. It's not perfect, but some of the prose was quite nice, and it really drew me in, especially the first half.

Edit: I honestly can't decide whether to give this 3.5 or 4 stars. Let's call it 3.75 😅
