Review by David
Nov 12Conscript is the first book in the Conscript Universe series, written by Scott Bartlett. We follow Po Abbato, a young man stuck with his family in a mining colony on the asteroid Psyche, a giant metal rich asteroid, about three times farther away from the Sun than is Earth. Po’s father is in prison, his mother has given up on life, and his older brother is not exactly the prefect role model either. But Po still does his best to contribute to the family, and especially to take care of his younger brother and sister.
Psyche, being so far from Earth, is home to a large number of shady types, and everything that comes with them. Po sees his chance to one-up some of these individuals, and score a large sum of money, so he can give his family a better life. Unfortunately, this does not go as planned, and Po ends up being conscripted. Safe to say, Po’s decisions results in him having the hardest time of his life as a marine in the army, but at the same time, he is also experiencing some mysterious events that can’t be easily explained.
The book was well written and had a good pace, and was supported by great characterisations and action moments, with very nice visual descriptions to put you at the side of Po. Throughout most of the book you are eager to find out what Po’s going to experience then, and what can explain some of the events that happens to him. There’s a great supporting character gallery, and a plot that poses enough questions for you to want to keep going. Po’s experiencing a lot of hardships that makes you root for him, despite some of them not being too well thought out, and he experiences quite a bit of character growth.
The book ends with a great setup for the sequel, after aliens comes into the picture.
I listened to the audiobook as narrated by Mark Boyett, Mr. Bartletts usual go-to narrator, and I was not dissatisfied at all. He provides great narration and enthusiasm, and made the audiobook a joy to listen to.
Overall, if you are into military science fiction, and require both a proper plot and character development, look no further, this is for you.
I received this audiobook for free from the author. I have no affiliation with the author, the narrator, the publisher, or their pets (Although I am sure the latter are quite nice!).
