The Good Earth

Review by Synedocheny

Nov 3
The Good Earth
Pearl S. Buck

The book centers around Wang Lung, who doesn't care about anyone else. He's a farmer who gets married to a person he doesn't talk to. He has some kids that he mostly ignores. He struggles then gets rich by luck and loses his way. He is never redeemed. He never reflects on anything.

I don't understand how one can have much sympathy for Wang Lung. His wife O-Lan is more pitiable, but mostly because the focus is on Wang Lang who treats her poorly. Not awfully, but not appropriate to what she does for him.

Interesting how Chinese people lived.

It's a fine, believable story. Well written, but simple.
