Mar 9, 2016It's a book of spectacular scope and ambition but questionable logic. Great amount of detail provided gives an impression of a well researched and thus strong argument but it doesn't seem to bind into a convincing synthesis.
RoS read as a collection of WWI related essays is actually quite interesting and at times fascinating. Most chapters are a good read each on its own and certain observations are remarkable but the high level ties between art and war seem rather insinuated than proven. In the end, the strongest impact the book had on me was making me rethink the methodology of humanist studies...
