Review by Sandy
Sep 9Only Temporary by Nicole Dykes is a beautifully written, emotionally rich story that pulled me in from the very first page. It follows Kellen, who suddenly finds himself with temporary custody of his younger siblings, and the touching journey he takes to build a stable, loving home for them—with the unwavering support of caseworker Philip and his best friend Tatum.
One of the most powerful aspects of this book is how it explores the idea that raising a family doesn’t always look traditional—and that’s okay. It takes courage to admit when you need help, and even more to accept it. Kellen’s story, and the way his chosen family comes together, reminded me so much of my own life. At just 17, my best friend and I raised her child together. Like Kellen and Tatum, we leaned on each other through every challenge, and found strength in our bond. Reading this book felt like revisiting that chapter of my life—full of love, struggle, and unbreakable connection.
Nicole Dykes captures all of this with sensitivity and heart. Only Temporary is more than just a story about unexpected parenthood—it's about found family, resilience, and the quiet bravery it takes to show up for the people you love. I adored this book and highly recommend it to anyone who believes that family is not just about blood, but about those who choose to stay.
