A Mathematician's Apology

Review by Abhinav Upadhyay

Feb 21, 2024
A Mathematician's Apology
G.H. Hardy

This is one of the most interesting essays on mathematics ever written and GH Hardy presents a beautiful case for the work that professional mathematicians do. His emphasis on the aesthetics, and the sheer beauty with which mathematics can be compared to the liberal arts and poetry of the highest order are not unfelt and will resonate through many hearts in the world.
Some ideas of the book are surely a bit outdated as of now but Hardy shall be excused for that as he has explained the possibility of such events in the future which were far from his comprehension at that time, but the advent of quantum computing and cryptography have well put most of the beautiful and artistic mathematics as well as physics which had been described as comparatively useless by him in the progress of life and well-being of humans, at the centre stage. They have now become very much useful and are bound to become even more useful in the near future.
