J.R. Lawrie was born in Manchester in 1989, received a first-class degree in English Literature from the University of Leeds in 2011, then vanished into the thorny undergrowth of fanfiction and was never seen again.

Their first novel The Sheltering Tree has been described as 'heart wrenchingly beautiful', 'a powerful and passionate story', and '1/5 never delivered'.
