5 stars for the narration by Julia Whelan
Honestly, the only reason I did not DNF the book was because I enjoyed Julia Whelan's narration. I also wanted to see how things wrapped up at the end, so at 3/4 of the way through I sped it up just to get there faster. The book started out well enough, and I thought, ok here we go! but then, the story just became repetitious and boring.
I didn't love Addie, I thought she was rather selfish, condescending and entitled. Petulant is a word that comes to mind here. Her anger towards Luc I understood, but his adoration of her, I did not, did he really love her, mmm, maybe not. I think he loved the IDEA of Addie being his love, I think he loved the chase, but Luc was the manifestation of Addie's imagination, he could have looked like anyone, or been anything. Several times in the book we're told Luc is just a shadow, a darkness. He took the form of Luc for Addie's purposes so my question is this, is a shadow capable of love?
I would have enjoyed more of Henry's backstory, Henry's character was so one dimensional and it made me sad that we didn't get more, nor was I satisfied with how his story ended. Addie's "sacrifice" to go with Luc so that Henry could live was not really a sacrifice in my opinion. I mean don't get me wrong, it was great that Henry got to live, but Addie was immortal, she was going to outlive Henry no matter what. The fact that she had to give up being with Henry and go with Luc wasn't exactly a hardship, Luc was her One True Love despite her constant denial. She may have loved Henry, but she was not IN love with him, she said so herself. She loved Remi, and Sam and many of her other lovers too but she was never IN love with any of them.
And finally, I thought her revenge plot against Luc at the end was just stupid, or maybe I was just out of patience and glad the book was over.
